How to Get There

Mashpi Lodge is located 70 miles, or three hours’ drive, northwest of Quito. The lodge provides complimentary shared transfers to/from Quito, and private transfers may be available at an extra cost.

Weather and Seasons

The Ecuadorian Chocó has no distinct seasons. The temperature is typically between 65°F and 75°F year-round. Because of its rain forest ecosystem, the area receives rainfall perennially and has a humidity level of around 60%.

What to Bring

Guests are supplied with rubber boots, waterproof ponchos, and basic walking poles.

It is recommended that guests bring the following:

  • Sun hat
  • Sunblock
  • Sunglasses
  • Swimwear
  • Walking shoes/sneakers
  • Socks: 2 pairs per day, preferably joggers’ socks that don’t slip easily inside rubber boots.
  • Lightweight, dark or neutral-toned, long-sleeved T-shirts and shirts
  • Dark or neutral-toned lightweight trousers
  • Light fleece/sweater
  • Sandals/Tevas
  • Gore-Tex jacket
  • Insect repellent
  • Good binoculars (guides also have pairs to share)
  • Small backpack for hikes
  • 6 Ziploc bags of different sizes for keeping things dry
  • Sealable bag for packing dirty laundry in luggage
  • Headlamp (or flashlight)
  • Extra batteries
  • Appliance chargers. Plugs in Ecuador are U.S.-style, 2 flat pins 110 volts. 220 volt adaptors can be supplied upon request.

Traveling with Family

Children of all ages are welcome at Mashpi Lodge. Child rates apply to guests age 12 and under sharing a room with two adults. Extra beds are available upon request.
