Located in South-Central Alaskan Wilderness, United States

Winterlake’s raison d’être is to provide a sublime setting for outdoor adventures and intimate encounters with Alaska’s deepest wilderness. The lodge gets you out exploring in all kinds of ways that are tailored to your interests, from self-guided kayaking and paddleboarding excursions on the lake to guided helicopter rides that whisk you to mountain peaks and glaciers. Things to Do

Activity inclusions vary by rate type and package. Please inquire with the lodge when requesting your reservation.

Hiking and heli-hiking

With mountains in most directions and valleys and canyons hidden among the peaks, the hiking opportunities at Winterlake are infinite. Head out on foot directly from the lodge on a variety of walks and hikes, or discover little-known trails in the heart of the Alaskan wilds on a guided heli-hiking adventure.

“Bring an empty water bottle on your heli-hike to Glacier Ridge when you land on the ice fill it up with pristine water from a moulin to enjoy with your picnic lunch" — Tony Ardisson, Winterlake Lodge manager

With the lake at the end of the dock, and rivers running through the surrounding mountains, Winterlake is a fantastic destination for anglers. Take a boat out on the lake and cast your line, or venture into the Canyon Creek wilderness for a day of fly- or float-fishing for salmon, rainbow trout, and grayling. A fishing expert is on hand to teach fly-fishing and fly-tying techniques.

Glacier Treks

Fly to one of the glaciers surrounding the lodge and take a walk along the ice to see the dazzling blue pools left by glacial melt. Go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing across the glacier, or head to a nearby river for a chance to watch a glacier calve.

Water Sports

Take one of the lodge’s kayaks, paddleboards, or canoes out on the lake—or simply go for a swim. Or gear up for an overnight rafting adventure on the Happy River with a lodge guide.

Soar along the southern edge of Denali in a helicopter or floatplane, taking in sweeping views of the vast forests below and spotting wildlife from above.

Winter Activities

Attend the Dixons' dog-mushing school and meet the lodge’s 20 huskies. Take a dogsled tour or try driving your own team along the famous Iditarod Trail. Go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, or take the helicopter into the backcountry for a guided skiing adventure.

The wellness room at the lodge offers a number of ways to relax after your day of adventure. Join a morning or afternoon yoga class, enjoy a complimentary massage (one per guest is included in each package), step into the wood-fired sauna, or take a soak under the sky in the cedar hot tub.

Food and Drink

Cuisine is a highlight at Winterlake, and guests are invited to take part in every part of the meal preparations, from picking berries to cooking with the lodge chef in the large open kitchen. With an award-winning chef at the helm, meals are always creative and fresh. Unwind at the evening wine tasting, then gather in the dining room for a lively dinner.
