Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort: About

Located in British Columbia, Canada

Resting in a serene meadow amid the rugged forests of British Columbia’s cowboy country, Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort is a lodge that embodies the adventurousness and resilience of the Gold Rush settlers that came to the area more than 150 years ago. Siwash’s bold spirit was put to the ultimate test in 2017, when a few brave staff members fought to save the property from the devastating forest fires that swept through the region that summer. The lodge is now embarking on a journey of renewal, reviving itself alongside the regenerating landscapes and offering guests an intimate look at a fascinating post-fire ecosystem. Channel your inner frontiersman as you set out to explore this rare wilderness of blackened snag forest—blanketed in magenta fireweed and the vivid green of new growth—and witness firsthand the tenacity of Canada’s Wild West.

  • Join an angling expert at Lake Siwash or a nearby river and try your hand at fly-fishing.

Why We Love This Lodge

The infamous Elephant Hill Wildfire has been called one of the most devastating forest fires in British Columbian history, and the lodge’s survival story is one of fierce dedication and a deep understanding for the power of nature. In the absence of government aid, Siwash’s owners leveraged their expertise as ranchers and wilderness dwellers to fight the fire themselves, establishing an irrigated safety zone at the heart of the property and meeting the approaching blaze head on, ultimately saving the main ranch house and other key facilities.

After the flames died down, Siwash took a proactive, protective approach to its post-fire reality by establishing the Wildland Private Nature Reserve at Siwash Lake—a nonprofit ecotourism society designed to conserve, study, and showcase the regeneration of the Cariboo ecosystem. Guests of Siwash inherit the lodge’s profound respect for nature, nurtured on excursions amid a dynamic wilderness that has much to teach us about the fragility of our planet.
