Bask in the magic of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem during the summer months, when wildflowers blanket the landscape. Venture into the wild backcountry by foot, bike, or horseback; or paddle along the shimmering Gallatin River, a Blue Ribbon trout stream.

Your experience at the lodge will be tailored to your interests. The sample itinerary below was designed for National Geographic travelers and can be customized as you wish. Some experiences featured in this itinerary incur an additional cost.

Day 1—Arrive Big Sky, Montana

Be greeted at the airport in Bozeman, Montana by a lodge representative, and take in the passing scenery on the hour-long drive to the ranch. This afternoon, mingle with fellow travelers and meet the lodge’s expert wranglers and guides while enjoying welcome refreshments on the veranda. Get primed on casting techniques by an Orvis-endorsed fly-fishing guide, then enjoy live music in the saloon. Sit down to a traditional Western meal made with local ingredients at the lodge’s new restaurant, then roast marshmallows around a roaring campfire and try your hand at a game of horseshoe.

Day 2—Outdoor Immersion

Greet the day with an early vinyasa yoga class followed by breakfast. Get an introduction to the lodge’s renowned equestrian program with the ranch’s experienced wranglers, who match guests with horses based on physicality and experience. Join a naturalist on a walk or hike amid the pristine landscapes of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, discovering rocky peaks, burbling creeks, and wide-open meadows blanketed with wildflowers. Take a lunch break to refuel on elevated frontier fare at the ranch’s new restaurant. This afternoon, join a guide for a mountain biking primer. Spend the rest of the day enjoying the ranch on your own.

Day 3—Exploring the Backcountry

After a hot home-style breakfast, set out on a guided biking adventure in the rugged backcountry of Big Sky, spotting intriguing flora, fauna, and geological features along the way. Return to the lodge for lunch, then head back out into the backcountry on foot. Venture with a naturalist into remote areas and learn about and encounter the wildlife that calls them home. Stretch out your weary muscles with an afternoon yoga session. Tonight, savor a chef-prepared meal in the great dining room.

Day 4—White-water Adventures

Enjoy a hearty ranch breakfast, then set out for a thrilling day of white-water rafting. Paddle along the scenic Gallatin River, taking on Class I through IV rapids. This afternoon, unwind with a soothing massage in the ranch’s original lodge. Recount the day’s adventures over a gourmet dinner, then gather with fellow travelers around the bonfire for s’mores and camaraderie.

Day 5—Equine Excursion

After breakfast, saddle up and discover Lone Mountain’s alpine landscapes on horseback. Ride into nearby nature reserves, including Yellowstone National Park, the Lee Metcalf Wilderness area, Gallatin National Forest, and the ranch’s own property. Tonight, feast on the flavors of Big Sky and order a menu special such as Rocky Mountain elk chops or Montana trout. Then follow the crowd to the festive saloon, where live music awaits.

Day 6—Wilderness Walk

Wake up to a special breakfast in a remote cabin, then join a lodge naturalist for a private walk to the Gallatin River, where you’ll learn about the key factors involved in preserving and protecting the watershed and its ecosystems. Sit down with your guide to enjoy a delicious picnic lunch on the riverbank. This afternoon, challenge your instincts on the lodge’s backcountry ropes course. Join fellow travelers for a family-style ranch dinner tonight.

Day 7—Wild West Finale

Fuel up on breakfast at the lodge, then head out for mid-day adventure at the ropes course, including a packed lunch. This afternoon, saddle up for one last horseback ride through the backcountry. Freshen up and retreat to the dining room, and linger over your final dinner at the ranch, followed by an evening around the campfire.

Day 8—Depart

After a last breakfast at the lodge, transfer back to Bozeman for your flight home.
