Lone Mountain Ranch: Plan Your Stay

Located in Big Sky, Montana, United States

How to Get There

Lone Mountain Ranch is located in the mountains of south-central Montana near the northwest border of Yellowstone National Park. The closest airport is Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, and Lone Mountain provides free shuttle services for the hour-long drive between the ranch and the airport. While the lodge also provides transportation for all guided activities during a guest’s stay, those who are interested in exploring the area independently should consider renting a car upon arrival in Bozeman.

What to Expect

All of the lodge guides are trained in first aid and several are trained in first-response CPR. The closest hospital is in Big Sky Town Center—a five-minute drive from the ranch.

Most of the accommodations at Lone Mountain Ranch do not provide in-room telephones or televisions. Select cell phone carriers service the ranch, and each cabin is equipped with Wi-Fi.

Weather and Seasons

The weather at Lone Mountain can be unpredictable, and guests should be equipped with a range of clothing and gear to handle rapidly changing conditions. Cold temperatures and snow are common in the fall, winter, and spring seasons, with the annual regional snowfall averaging 150 inches. The summer months see warmer days and cool nights, with daytime highs reaching between 70 and 85 degrees, and overnight lows falling to between 40 and 60 degrees.

What to Bring

Your packing list will depend on the season you travel and the activities you plan to do; however, all guests should pack layers and comfortable active wear for outdoor exploration. The lodge can provide riding boots and cross-country ski and fly-fishing gear. Apparel can also be purchased at the onsite Outdoor Shop.

Traveling with Family

Lone Mountain is the ideal spot for a unique family retreat, with its wide range of engaging activities geared toward children and their families. The lodge’s Outdoor Youth Adventures program was designed in the spirit of a summer camp, offering ranch- and wilderness-based excursions for children and teenagers that can be tailored to individual interests. Available activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • For children (ages 4 to 12): Pony and horse rides, ropes courses, scavenger hunts, archery, nature exploration, field and rodeo games, art projects, canoeing, and short hikes
  • For teenagers (ages 13 to 17): Overnight backcountry excursions, geocaching, animal tracking, nature exploration, and long hikes

Parents are invited to join their children in activities as they wish. Themed evening programs—such as pizza parties, board game nights, and cookouts with campfire music—are regularly planned for families. Two nights each week, the lodge hosts special dinners for children so that parents may enjoy private meals together in the lodge dining room.

Lone Mountain also offers a variety of family-friendly accommodations, including multi-bedroom cabins and large, private homes with spacious living areas. Children three years of age and under stay complimentary and babysitting services are available at an additional cost.
