Arrive in Winnipeg by early evening and check in to The Grand, conveniently located at Winnipeg's International Airport. At 7:00 pm meet other lodge guests and a Churchill Wild adventure specialist for dinner at the hotel.
Take an early flight to Churchill, where staff will meet you and facilitate your transfer to the lodge. Fly by fixed-wing aircraft to the lodge, soaring over the Churchill River and then northwest up the rugged Hudson Bay coast to Seal Bay Heritage Lodge. Keep an eye out enroute for caribou, seals, wolves and of course the great “ice bears.” Upon arrival, join your hosts for a tour of the property and get settled into your room. A thorough orientation on travelling in polar bear country will be provided prior to any outings. Then it’s time to assemble your camera equipment and start burning some serious gigabytes!
The wildly rugged and remote location of the lodge caters to the dedicated wildlife photographer willing to spend long hours in the field to get great shots of arctic wildlife in spectacular scenery. Set on the Hudson Bay shore, the lodge is an ideal base for photographing bears on snow and ice. The exceptional number of clear nights make for excellent opportunities to capture the northern lights.
You’ll spend each day exploring the area on walks, spending time observing and photographing wildlife and Arctic landscapes. Meal times will be adjusted (and sometimes meals will be interrupted) to accommodate photo opportunities, which are the main priority. Generally breakfast is served at 8:00. Lunches are typically held at the lodge between excursions, and appetizers begin at 6:00 pm followed by dinner. In the evening, settle in around the fireplace to download your images, share the day’s adventures, or take in an informative talk or slide show. The entire property is patrolled all night by a night watchman so be prepared to have your sleep cut short if there’s a nocturnal visit by a polar bear or a particularly dazzling display of northern lights.
After a hearty breakfast, prepare for the flight back to Churchill—another opportunity to take aerial shots of Arctic. Your bags will be stored for you, leaving you free to explore this frontier town. Sites of note are Cape Merry, the Port of Churchill, the Itsantiq Museum, as well as the Parks Canada exhibit. An afternoon dog-sledding or helicopter excursion can be arranged by Churchill Wild if you’re so inclined. Enjoy an early dinner before the flight to Winnipeg (you will be provided with a meal voucher for participating restaurants). Upon arrival in Winnipeg, make your way back to The Grand. Depart for home after breakfast the following day.
