Susafa: About

Located in Sicily, Italy

Perched on a green hilltop in Sicily, surrounded by rolling wheat fields and stately Roman ruins, you’ll find the 19th-century estate of Susafa. The Saeli-Rizzuto family has harvested fruit, pressed wine, and produced cheese at this historic masseria for five generations; today, guests are welcomed behind the old stone walls for a taste of authentic Sicilian hospitality. Life goes on amid this sun-tinted swirl of countryside much as it has for centuries. Shepherds still invite you to stir pots of fresh ricotta on the patio, and the garden’s crisp herbs and plump cherries still beg to be picked. Amble through fields of gold across the unmarked boundaries of nearby farms, ride horseback along a breezy ridgeline, or spend a day on Sicily’s spectacular beaches—knowing that a leisurely evening back at your country estate awaits, just as it has for hundreds of years.

  • Indulge in flavorful Sicilian cuisine served at the lodge’s farm-to-table restaurant, and learn the secrets of family recipes in hands-on cooking classes.
  • Participate in seasonal harvests, picking fragrant cherries and reaping golden wheat in the summer and gathering grapes and tomatoes in autumn.
  • Set out with local guides to explore the surrounding hills on foot or on horseback, getting a glimpse of traditional life in Sicily’s Madonie mountains.
  • Head to the coastal town of Cefalù to relax on a sun-soaked beach, take a dip in the turquoise Tyrrhenian sea, and set foot inside a 12th-century Norman cathedral.
  • Venture to nearby historic sites such as the Grecian city of Akragas and the Villa Romana del Casale, home to one of the world’s richest collections of Roman mosaics.

Why We Love This Lodge

There are few places in the world where time truly seems to slow—and Susafa is one of them. Days here come and go according to the rhythm of the seasons and the movement of the sun, and the patterns of daily life have changed little after two hundred years of sowing and reaping. Sustainability is a simple, time-honored fact of life in a place seemingly untouched by modern industrialization, where respect for the land governs every aspect of the lodge’s activities. The vegetables have always been organic and hyper-local, and the pasta, bread, and cheese are made by hand—perhaps even by a fellow guest. Single-use plastics have never had a place behind these old stone walls, and a host of other sustainability initiatives—from responsible water usage to eco-friendly cleaning products—ensure that the farm maintains its age-old commitment to the health of this stunning environment.
