Borgo Pignano: About

Located in Tuscany, Italy

South of Pisa, nestled in the heart of the Tuscan countryside and perched atop a cypress-dotted hill, a piece of paradise awaits. Borgo Pignano is the Italy of your dreams: a 750-acre country estate built upon an ancient Etruscan hamlet with meticulously restored cottages and farmhouses, a medieval church, olive groves, and gardens radiating from its 18th-century villa. Here, guests are invited not only to visit Tuscany, but to luxuriate in its rhythms, traditions, and flavors—collecting honey with the lodge’s beekeeper; picking fresh flowers to be ground into organic teas by its resident herbalist; or taking in sublime views while rambling along its nature paths. While the estate feels remote and peaceful, many of Tuscany’s historic hill towns are just a short drive away–that is, if you can be persuaded to leave.

  • Savor innovative, “hyper-local” cuisine at the lodge’s elegant restaurant, complimented by a selection of organic and biodynamic Tuscan wines.
  • Hike or bike along the lodge’s private nature trails, soaking up show-stopping views of Tuscany’s undulating hills, valleys, and meadows.
  • Embark on a guided horseback excursion to a woodland waterfall and enjoy a gourmet picnic.
  • Immerse yourself in quintessential Tuscan traditions through cooking lessons, wine tastings, painting classes, and more.

Why We Love This Lodge

Borgo means “village” in Italian—and indeed, Borgo Pignano is a village unto itself. Sustainable infrastructure provides the backbone for all the lodge’s activities—from the organic plasters and eco-paints used to restore its buildings, to its heating and hot water systems, which are fueled by solar panels and woodchip-fired boilers—which, in turn, are fed by timber harvested from the property. Drawing on the practices of generations of Tuscan farmers, the lodge employs natural and sustainable agricultural methods designed to improve the soil and increase the fertility of its lands, thereby creating a self-supporting ecosystem.

Beyond the land and yet intrinsically connected to it, Borgo Pignano cultivates a space where art and creativity are nourished. Guests are invited to explore the lodge’s art gallery, sculpture garden, and impressive collection of 20th-century British art. Borgo Pignano also collaborates with the Royal Drawing School in London to offer summer residencies for student artists. These talented young artists infuse the lodge with a unique vitality that extends to guests in the form of painting classes, gallery exhibitions, and more.
