You'll be greeted upon your arrival at Sandakan Airport by friendly Sukau Rainforest Lodge staff. Get acquainted before journeying to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation & Borneo Sunbear Conservation Centre where you'll learn about the plight of the orangutan and sunbear and, then see local conservation efforts firsthand. A short ten-minute stroll through the rainforest on wooden boardwalks takes you to the viewing platform where you can witness an orangutan feeding. If the creatures are feeling particularly friendly, they may let you observe them up close.
After lunch transfer to your villa at Sukau Rainforest Lodge up the Kinabatangan River by boat (2.5 hours). Keep an eye out for a variety of birds along the way, and if you're lucky, you may even spot the shy Bornean Pygmy Elephants. Cool down with a refreshing drink and cold towel upon arrival. Take a few moments to savor afternoon tea before heading out into the wild on your first river safari.
Take loads of photographs as you are sure to see a wide range of wildlife. Return to the lodge for a solar-heated hot shower before enjoying a candlelit buffet dinner overlooking the river. Dinner is followed by an educational slide show and presentation by Sukau’s in-house naturalist guide. Stay overnight at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge.
Rise bright and early to catch the rainforest waking up. After a light breakfast, embark on a morning river cruise in search of waking wildlife that are most active in the morning. Return to a full lunch at the lodge.
After lunch, take an educational walking tour along the lodge's Hornbill Boardwalk with Sukau’s in-house naturalist. After this, you’ll have time to relax or choose from a wide selection of optional activities such as spa treatments, cultural painting, or swimming.
After afternoon tea, head out onto the river once again for National Geographic Exclusive evening wildlife cruise. Enjoy candlelight dinner and an overnight stay at Sukau Rainforest Lodge.
After breakfast, return to Sandakan by boat. Enjoy a quick lunch before proceeding to the airport for your flight to Kota Kinabalu. Alternatively, if you are taking the evening flight, you will have time to visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre, which has an impressive information center.
