Photographer Ami Vitale spent time on assignment in northern Kenya this year, photographing orphaned elephants and their caretakers at the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary on the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, a protected reserve in the Mathews Range owned by the Samburu people. Ami set up her base in the conservancy at Sarara Camp, a National Geographic Unique Lodge that is deeply involved in helping the local community kick start this grassroots conservation project. Efforts like these have helped return wildlife to the region, which is once again home to Kenya’s second largest elephant population—and they’ve also created sustainable economic opportunities for the Samburu.
