Rubondo Island has a landing strip that can accommodate light aircraft. There are scheduled flights from Arusha and Dar es Salaam, and Auric Air also flies from Bukoba and Mwanza. Transfers from the airstrip to the lodge are included in your stay.
Those traveling by road can drive to the lakeside towns of Muganza or Nkome, and continue by boat to the island. Both Asilia and TANAPA run speedboats to the island from Muganza, a 30-minute voyage at $100 USD round-trip, and TANAPA also makes the 90-minute voyage from Nkome for $180 USD round-trip.
When not on the water or on foot, getting around the island is by open or closed safari vehicles, and drives can be bumpy, dusty, and exposed to the elements. Due to the remote location of the property and its rugged surroundings, guests with limited mobility should call us to discuss whether a visit to Rubondo is feasible.
Temperatures fluctuate more on Lake Victoria than they do in Tanzania’s inland parks, so it is best to dress in layers. Lightweight casual clothing can be worn all year-round, with some warm clothes for cooler early mornings and evenings. When on safari, clothes should be simple and neutral—khakis, browns, and greens—so as not to draw attention or disturb the wildlife. It is also advisable to bring closed shoes (sneakers are fine) or good walking shoes for hikes around the island.
Please note: for those arriving by light aircraft, luggage may weigh no more than 33 lb (15 kg) and must be packed in a soft bag. Dinners are casual and laundry service is available, so we encourage you to pack lightly.
