Daily flights connect the Johannesburg airport to the Madikwe Game Reserve, and the lodge provides complimentary transfers to and from the Madikwe eastern airstrip before dark. Road transfers from Johannesburg and Pretoria in South Africa or Gaborone in Botswana can be arranged for guests who prefer to travel to the lodge overland, while private charters and helicopter transfers are available on request. Guests may also rent a car and arrive on their own.
The lodge is located in a remote area with no immediate access to a pharmacy or hospital. Staff members are trained in basic first aid; however, guests should not travel without their needed prescriptions and medications. Jaci’s Lodges also require guests to carry comprehensive travel and medical insurance for themselves and any dependents. In the case of a medical emergency, guests can be driven two-and-half hours to a private hospital in Rustenburg, or airlifted to Johannesburg or Pretoria. The Madikwe Game Reserve is located in a malaria-free zone, but it is recommended that guests consult their physician or travel clinic for the latest health updates in the region before traveling.
The weather in South Africa is generally pleasant throughout the year. Summer runs from October to April, bringing hot days, warm nights, and frequent thunderstorms. From May to September—the dry or winter season—there is little to no rain, and temperatures are typically warm in the afternoon but can turn very cold overnight. Wildlife can be observed at Madikwe year-round, though certain animals are easier to spot during the winter, when the vegetation is sparser.
At Jaci’s Lodges, dinners are casual and laundry service is available, so guests are encouraged to pack lightly. Layering your clothing is essential, especially in the winter months; and neutral colors are recommended. Don’t forget to pack comfortable walking shoes and sandals, as well as ample sun protection. If you are flying into Madikwe by charter plane, note that your luggage may not weigh more than 44 pounds and must be packed in soft bags measuring no larger than 10 inches wide by 12 inches high and 25 inches long.
Children of all ages are welcome at the Nare and Safari Suites at Jaci’s Safari Lodge, and may be accommodated upon special request in the Tented Suites. The Safari Lodge provides an array of engaging activities geared towards young travelers, such as cookie baking or arts and crafts using recycled materials. Children under the age of 13 are not permitted at Jaci’s Tree Lodge. Please note that South Africa requires specific documentation for travelers aged 18 and below, so make sure you carry the necessary paperwork.
