Referred to as “Maasai meets Versaille,” andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is truly a place apart. From the outside, guest villas on stilts evoke traditional East African red-mud-and-thatch homesteads. Inside is another story altogether: beaded chandeliers dangle from banana-leaf ceilings, gilt mirrors hang over spacious bathtubs; and raw silk curtains billow amid antiques, Persian rugs, and four-poster beds. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto sweeping views of the crater below. Outside is pure wilderness; inside is pure luxury.
The North and South Camps, with 12 suites each, offer unobstructed views of the crater, while the Tree Camp, with six suites, sits right on the edge of the crater, built around a sacred strangler fig tree planted by the area’s inhabitants generations ago. Each camp has its own common space and dining room. Personal butlers discretely cater to guest’s needs, whether drawing a hot bubble bath, stoking the fireplace, or serving tea in bed. All suites include safes, Wi-fi, telephones, hairdryers, slippers, and bathrobes, as well as a variety of exercise equipment and a yoga mat.
