You'll be greeted upon your arrival at Sandakan Airport by friendly Sukau Rainforest Lodge staff. Get acquainted before journeying to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre where you'll learn about the plight of the orangutan and see local conservation efforts firsthand. A short ten minutes stroll through the rainforest on wooden boardwalks takes you to the viewing platform where you can witness an orangutan feeding. If the creatures are feeling particularly friendly, they may let you observe them up close. After the feeding, enjoy an educational video to learn more about the difficulties orangutans face and the conservation efforts of the centre.
After lunch, head to the Sandakan jetty for a 2.5-hour boat journey up the Kinabatangan River to Sukau Rainforest Lodge. Keep an eye out for a variety of birds along the way, and if you're lucky, you may even spot the shy Bornean Pygmy Elephants. Cool down with a refreshing drink and cold towel upon arrival. Take a few moments to savor afternoon tea before heading out into the wild on your first river safari.
Take loads of photographs as you are sure to see a wide range of wildlife. Return to the lodge for a solar-heated hot shower before enjoying a candlelit buffet dinner overlooking the river. Dinner is followed by an educational slide show and presentation by Sukau’s in-house naturalist guide. Stay overnight at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge.
Rise bright and early to catch the rainforest waking up. After a light breakfast, embark on a morning river cruise in search of waking wildlife that are most active in the morning. Return to a full breakfast at the lodge.
After breakfast, take an educational walking tour along the lodge's Hornbill Boardwalk with Sukau’s in-house naturalist. After this, you’ll have time to relax or choose from a wide selection of optional activities such as spa treatments, cultural painting, or swimming.
After afternoon tea, head out onto the river once again for an evening wildlife cruise. Enjoy candlelight dinner and an overnight stay at Sukau Rainforest Lodge.
Take an early morning river cruise along the Menanggol River before returning for a full breakfast. Relax or enjoy an optional activity until lunch.
After lunch, journey to the Gomantong Cave to look for orangutans in their natural habitat. Explore the cave and its surroundings until sunset, when you can watch the exodus of over two million bats heading out for the night, swiftlets coming in to nest, and eagles swooping in to prey on the bats. Return to Sukau Rainforest Lodge.
After breakfast, return to Sandakan by boat. Enjoy a quick lunch before proceeding to the airport for your flight to Kota Kinabalu. Alternatively, if you are taking the evening flight, you will have time to visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre, which has an impressive information center. Take in an aerial view of the centre from the canopy walkway and tower before exploring the botanical gardens, home to various species of flora including orchids and agricultural plants. If you are interested, proceed to the Sandakan Memorial Park, built to memorialize lost prisoners of war from World War II. Return to the Sandakan airport for your evening flight.
