Located in Kalahari, South Africa

How to Get There

By Air:

Tswalu operates its own daily, direct flights to the reserve’s private airstrip. Departures are from Cape Town International Airport (2-hour flight) and O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg (1.5-hour flight). Please call to inquire about the current rates. Flight costs include transfers between the hanger and airport hotels, the main terminal, or rental car companies. Please note: There is a luggage allowance of 26.5 lbs/12 kg per person in a soft-sided bag plus one handheld item that should weigh no more than 13 lbs/6 kg. Guests may store luggage at the hangar until their return from Tswalu at no charge.

By Car:

From Johannesburg (approximately 400 miles/650 km):

  • Travel to Kuruman via Vryburg (N14). In Kuruman, follow the signs for Hotazel (R31).
  • After approximately 37 miles/60 km, cross over a railway bridge at Hotazel.
  • Approximately 9 miles/15 km further (before Blackrock), turn left onto a tar road at the sign that reads, “Van Zylsrus/Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.”
  • After approximately 27 miles/44 km, turn left at a gravel road where the sign reads, “Tswalu Kalahari Reserve” (this point is marked “Sonstraal” on maps and GPS). Proceed with caution down the gravel road. Travel approximately 4 miles/6 km and you will see a gate on either side of the road. Here, Motse guests will be met by a Tswalu vehicle and escorted further.

From Kimberley (approximately 230 miles/375 km):

  • From Kimberley Airport, travel on R31 for 21 miles/35 km to Barkley West.
  • From Barkley West, travel 60 miles/96 km to Danielskuil. Be aware of a turn to the right en route to Danielskuil.
  • From Danielskuil, travel 44 miles/71 km to Kuruman.
  • In Kuruman, proceed through town following the signs to Hotazel (R31).
  • See route from Kuruman above.

From Upington (approximately 215 miles/350 km — 6 miles/10 km on gravel road):

  • If you are concerned about gravel roads and poor road conditions (especially through the mountain pass) proceed beyond Olifantshoek toward Kathu/Sishen. Approximately 192 miles/310 km out of Upington, with the mine on your left, turn left on R380 toward Deben and Sishen airport.
  • Proceed through the next 4-way intersections. After the second intersection (Kathu Mall on right and Sishen mine on left), continue for approximately 12 miles/19 km (past the airfield on the right). Turn right at the sign that shows “R380 HOTAZEL.”
  • Proceed for 26 miles/42 km to the next T-junction. Turn left toward Blackrock.
  • Continue for approximately 10 miles/16 km. Turn left at the sign that indicates, “Van Zylsrus/Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.”
  • Continue as described in the Johannesburg route.
